4th Quarter Project - STRING DESIGN / KITE DAY!

Summer is almost here, and it’s about time to start working on the 4th Quarter projects! Every quarter, I try to integrate imagination into the math curriculum through these quarterly projects. As a refresher to those of you who may not remember, the quarter projects were:

   1. Origami Day
   2.  Found Object (that funny project with the cameras)
   3.  Mathematician (Poster / PowerPoint / Prezi projects)
   4.  Kite Day / String Design

This note is to inform you what I have asked each student to supply for themselves. I have talked about this project in my class since the beginning of March, and am now informing you by mail in case students “forgot” to tell you why they may need all these materials;

Ø             Middle School-
o        Black poster paper, 8” x 8” max, for me to copy the “blueprints” on the backside, and
attach thread or string. I’ve found the perfect thickness of paper at scrapbooking
         stores.
o        Thread or string of ANY COLOR. Fluorescent thread would be brighter against the
                           black paper.
o        A needle to be able to thread the string through the paper.
o        Your students will pick out a geometrical design in my class, and we will build these
   projects during class.

Ø                   Geometry (No one this year...)-
o        Yarn of ANY COLOR
o        Tissue paper, about 15-20 sq. ft. preferable, of ANY COLOR.
o        Kite string – to FLY these kites.
o        Glue sticks are welcome in any quantity. Someone always forgets.
o        I will be the supplier of about 2500 straws, so “you” don’t need these.
o        Your students will be designing and building these kites during my class, so no home
time is necessary unless your student clowns around and doesn’t get their project
                           finished.

Ø                   Algebra 2-
o        Yarn of ANY COLOR
o        A needle to be able to thread the string through straws.
o        Your students will pick out a geometrical design in my class, and we will build these

   projects during class.

o        I will be the supplier of about 2500 straws, so “you” don’t need these.
o        If your student wants to use wooden dowels for their projects - they're a lot sturdier, and will last longer - this will be okay
but not required for their projects.  Wooden dowels will require the use of a small saw to cut grooves for the string to
         "pass through".

My plans are to start building these projects on or around the first or second week of May. I will have these dates more “squared away” as soon as I can forecast the weather for a nice day to go fly the kites! If you have ANY questions regarding the materials needed, or if you are unable to acquire these items in the remaining time, please contact me, Mr. Werner, or another classmate for help getting these materials. This project is worth 100 points (just for your information), and I am really looking forward to seeing what can be created by your students.

Have FUN!
