Text: College Algebra 4^th ed. Beecher/Penna/Bittinger, Addison Wessley

Other Materials: Any calculator with scientific notation, exponents and square roots.

Objectives:

To understand the basic concepts of algebra, equations, inequalities, polynomial and rational functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, systems of equations, matrices, conic sections, sequences, series and combinatorics.

Expectations:

• Please do all assignments in pencil (it's easier to erase mistakes than erasable pen).
• Copy down all notes written.  These notes will be allowed on tests or the final.
• When you are absent, it is your responsibility to find out what you missed from either another student or the internet.
• Every other day (or thereabouts), students will take a "Mini Quiz" which will pertain to the homework that was assigned that week.  These "Mini Quizzes" will be collected and sent to me for grading through the fax machines by 2:00 of the date administered.
• Call me at home if you have any questions pertaining to homework.  The only stipulation that I have is that you do not call too late at night - you shouldn't be doing math homework late at night, anyways :)

Exams:

There will be weekly quizzes covering the assignments over the previous week, tests covering the chapters covered, and a final exam covering the material throughout the semester. The point “break down” goes as follows:

Quizzes - closed note, closed book worth 10 points each section

Tests - open note, closed book worth 100 points

Final - open note, closed book worth 200 points

All quizzes/tests are due at the end of the class hour.  They are to be turned in to the appropriate person to be faxed to me by 2:00 the day the assessment was assigned.

Homework:

A few problems will be assigned from each section covered based on the projected timeline (please see lesson plans), but these homework problems will not be individually graded. I perform a quiz each week on random homework problems to test competency. If you do your homework, those problems will be on the quiz, and you’ve just demonstrated mastery of the topic.

Grading Scale:

I grade on total point value, not on a weighted curve. The scale is as follows:

A - 90% - 100%

B - 80% - 89%

C - 70% - 79%

D - 60% - 69%

F - Below 60%

Of course there are things that are not listed on this one page syllabus that are covered in class. Things happen, and rules change. Please see me or call me if you have any questions about this class if there is any confusion. I look forward to having you as students, and for the first days of school to commence.
